850 Motor Swap

I have tried to search this and have been reading through pages for about 5 hrs and not quite got a answer. My car is getting tired I have sold my muscle car project and want to work on my Volvo (96 855 turbo 5 spd ). It has 195000 miles on it and compression is down about 120 per cylinder uses some oil and the 15g needs a rebuild. I would like to upgrade the motor or possibly rebuild. There are 2 available locally a 2002 V70 T5 (2.3) $900 with all accessory's and 100000 Miles on it and 2006 S60R  with 85000 miles on it which would be better to use ? Can you point me in the right direction to posts were these swaps have been done? Also your thoughts ideas and suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks!

240 Budget Exhaust?

Hey, I'm looking for a better exhaust note on my '87 244. Nothing ricey, just something that might increase airflow a bit, and give it a little bit of a throatier sound. A cat-back system is preferred. My dad had a custom one fitted for his 1800 and it sounds amazing at 5500RPM, and I'm looking for something similar. Any help building one would be appreciated, because I'm not sure where to start. Budget is ~$100

Kinugawa Rb20/25 Style Housing Issues

Alright, so I finally got my car all together and mostly broken in. I've done a couple pulls and it seems when I shift to the next gear my car won't build boost again. I'm also seeing really high high rpm boost levels as well (31psi @ 6200). I disconnected the actuator arm and to my surprise the wastegate flapper was hard to move/notchy, so I believe it just gets stuck open once the wastegate opens and it takes a while to close. I had also tested it with it open as far as it would go, and it felt very similar to the no boost feeling I described on upshifts, but if I stay in it, it still hits 14psi @ 4700 rpm, and at that point it was rising at a fairly decent rate, so I think it's time for external wastegate. If my wastegate is broken, plus doesn't flow enough it doesn't leave me much choice lol.

Exhaust Flange Help!

Ok, so I've had my beloved s70 t5m for about 7 months now and absolutely love it! I have a few upgrades done so far (ipd stage 1 tune, short ram intake, sconeman pipe, mbc, etc). My next upgrade is going to be an ipd exhaust system. My car has the stock turbo (16t) so I ordered the kit with the straight flange DP. In the future I would like to upgrade to an 18t or 19t turbo. I would prefer to avoid the hassle of having to buy an angle flange DP and sell the straight flange one. Is there anyway I can make the 18t or 19t a straight flange so it will mate up to the current DP??? This might seem like a noobish question, but I'm new to fwd, volvos, and turbos haha! This is actually my first import and have been fully impressed so far! Sorry this is so long, and thanks in advanced!

Volvo Rebuild For Dummies

I titled this "Rebuild for dummies" cause I'm not here to pretend I know it all. Specially about volvos.
I am getting ready to rebuild my t5 out of my 99 V70 R, it's been setting way to long. Blew the motor a couple years ago after letting a shabby mechanic rebuild the head. The guy didn't even set the cams right. Well it's water under the bridge now and I guess if I want to have something done right I do it my self.

I'm a gear head but am use to working on Gms or nissans so I'm kinda new to Volvo but I'm learning fast since I've drove the car for a few years. And love it.

Well my first question is what's the best way to pull the head cam cover? Does it take a special pulling tool and where do I find it.?
I'm kinda anxious to see what kinda damage I did.
I also would be interested in what Manuel to use for the best information.
I'd be happy to share picturse as I go along and learn for my self it can be kinda the Volvo rebuild for dummies" paperback, lol.

So what I have is a Stock t5 R turbo with some mild upgrades like better exhaust and intake a better controller from IPD
What I want is mild racing pistons, down pipe, stage 2-3 chipping and a bullet proof motor to pull 325-350 hp without ripping out the automatic tranny. Kinda the get to work fast fun work rig.:)
I'd love a little help here in my rebuild so if y'all have any constructive advise on to where to by parts, and what not to dos I'd seriously appreciate it.
I did find these guys for rebuild kits. Has any one used them before? What do you thinks?

Also if their are other posts out there that you think would be a good read for me I'd love to read em.

Thanks in advance,

Easiest way to clean up silicone turbo hoses?  Swapping a bunch of silicone hoses from my black wagon on to my yellow wagon, and want to make them squeeky clean.  They have old oil on them, especially the Snabb pipe.  Thanks!

04 S60R Navigation System Conversion

So my 04 S60R did not come with factory navigation, no worries though cause im only running the factory speakers. i have a pioneer flip out DVD player, and would love to buy a used navigation screen set up, but only to wire up to where whatever is displayed on my TV is also displayed on the pop up screen. Im just wondering if anyone has any wiring info or what adapters have to be used(something like unto a RCA invertor, but for video instead). Has anyone done this? Ive done some searching and found where some have replaced it with other screens and other nav systems but still use the pop up (a lot of custom fabricating which i dont want to do) i know some say its frivolous but the wow factor would be cool, especially when watching movies. I have 7 inch sun visor monitors in my 850R, and the kids love them. Anyways, let me know what you guys think or know!

98R Rear Coils. What Shock Besides Koni

Looking into piecing together a coilover set up for my car. Im on sort of a budget and cant afford the KW set up or the koni rear socks. Im looking to do the kaplhenke rear set up. Will OEM non nivo shocks be a bad idea with this? My Nivo's are trashed and leaking.

For the front Im still not sure. My car is bouncy and all over the place with IPD springs on OEM struts. I want to tighten up the entire car to give back confidence in cornering. Its pathetic that my buddies B4 Passat on cheap Raceland coils feels 1 million times better than my car. The suspension is definitely old and extremely tired. Im also going to do F/R sway bars at the same time

So, I want the ability to run a cold air feed to my air filter, and as you can't get Morette lights for a V70 I decided to make my own.

Started off by taking a mold off a headlight:

Pulled the mold off and trimmed it down:

fixed a couple of plant pots and fiberglass it all up:

popped it out of the mold and started to fill the imperfections:

Wastegate Adjustment

Hello Members,

I am looking for some feedback on the following;

I have a 2004 s60 2.5t FWD and was interested in adjusting the wastegate with the tool from IPD. I have heard from many different forums that this can safely be done but after speaking to the boys over at IPD today they do not recommend it. I was told that the car comes stock with roughly 3.5 - 5 psi and if I were to attempt to bring it any higher that I run a big risk of blowing the engine. Now I understand if they are informing me of this most likely I should listen but I have heard a mixed bag of responses and suggestions out there on this topic and want to make sure they aren't just being cautious because it is a liability issue? Can someone please point me in the right direction so that I can put this to rest?

Thanks in advance!!

Figured I would post it up since I haven't seen any/many others.  I was running Rica's Stage 2 tune, IPD HD CBV, ARD HD TCV, Snabb intake, OBX 3" catless downpipe, one step colder plugs gapped to .024".  This was on a Mustang Dyno.  Sure seems like there are some issues here... anybody want to weigh in?

Has Anyone Installed A Terratrip Or Similar Rally Computer In An 850?

$

I have an older Terratrip 404+ that I want to install in to my 97 850 T-5 for a navigational rally this weekend.  The previous owner of the computer built a harness so that it can be removed easily and just plugs in to the lighter socket and just needs a lead attached to the VSS or ABS signal with a female spade connector.

My question is this:

What is the best way to wire this in to an 850?  If it was a 740 or 240 with an electronic speedo, I would just tap in to the vss line behind the cluster.  On an 850 though, I have to pull the dash pad up in order to get the cluster out of there.  Is there a better spot to intercept the wire?  Or perhaps another option?  I was thinking maybe something related to the OBD-2 port.  Brantz sells something similar for their systems, but who knows if it is compatible. http://www.brantz.co.uk/sensors.htm

I'm checking with Brantz and Terratrip in the meantime, but figured I'd see if anyone here might have some vehicle specific information I could use.  Has anyone here done something similar in their P80?

Worst case scenario, I'll be using an ODB-2 BT adapter and using Torque or something similar on a tablet if I can't get this working in time.

01 V70 T5 Motor Or Upgrade Existing?

97 850 GLT stock motor approaching 200k miles. I have been acquiring parts (or had them from previous projects) to upgrade the existing motor for more performance.

I have:
16T angled flange out of a 01 v70 T5 and injectors
850 n/a TB and manifold
fmic and piping
new plugs, cap and wires
new pcv kit (waiting to put on)
and some other misc. stuff.

I can get a motor out of another 01 V70 T5 w/ 87k miles, complete, including another 16T for $450.
The one I scavenged my 16T from had been picked from quite a bit. The one I can get the complete motor from looks clean enough to eat off of and drop a battery in it and drive it out of the yard. I have bought a lot of stuff from the guy so to me he's trustworthy enough to believe him that it is a good running motor. And I get a warranty with it.

Questions so I get this right. Correct me if I'm wrong.
The 01 is considered a RN block?
The 97 LPT blocks have thinner walls?
01 VVT sensor can be left unplugged?
01 cam needs to be drilled for dist.?
Use the 01 accessories brackets?
Can I still use 850 n/a cams in the 01 block?

Either way I go I still am getting an exhaust w/ 3" dp and a tune.
I've done a lot of research and reading with still more to go. I have got dozens of pages from here and the VF site bookmarked for reference. I would like a good platform for even more mods in the future.

Posed same question elsewhere but no response yet. Thanks in advance.

Help! Wrong S60R Clutch/flywheel Combo For M66 Swap?

$

Unexpected problem guys

I ordered an S60R (P/N 31367642) clutch from IPD to use with my Kalmar-Union SMF(M66 version) for my M66 swap into my 96' 850 T5. The KU SMF is supposed to be a direct replacement to the OE DMF which I can verify from past experience, is accurate. The S60R clutch kit I ordered though, has a significantly shorter stack height (from the bottom of the flywheel to the fingers on top of the pressure plate) as compared to the 850R clutch kit I have currently with the M56 on the car. I spoke to Don from Kalmar Union and he says that there might be a variance between the standard common S60R clutch and the clutch I got (he told me that Hussein ran into the same problem with his XR). Don tells me that the S60R clutch kit guaranteed to work with the KU SMF is P/N 30783258. Can anyone chime in and see if the two clutch kits interchange? So far from my limited search on a few sites I see no part interchange between the two clutch kits. I have an AP Racing Clutch (the same one Hussein and a few other guys are running) and when I put the AP Clutch and Pressure plate on top of the KU SMF the stack height is the same as the 850R clutch currently on the car.

If my S60R clutch/pressure plate can't be used with the KU SMF because of incorrect stack height, would it be possible to use the disc from the PN 31367642 clutch on my 850R flywheel and pressure plate? I measured the band of friction material on the S60R clutch disc (~41mm, ~35mm for the 850R disc) and the band of friction material on the 850Rs pressure plate (~35mm).... this would translate in the 850R pressure plate not being able to clamp ~6mm of friction material on the S60R clutch... I'm not sure if this would have any implications on the lifespan of the disc itself.

Worst case scenario, if neither the S60R clutch/pressure plate can be used on the KU SMF or the S60R disc can't be used on the 850R pressure plate/flywheel, I can always resort to the KU-AP Kit that I have... but I really don't want to use that (that kit is destined to be used in my S80). The 850 NEEDS to be working by friday so I need to get something sorted out ASAP.

Thanks!!!

If I get time today I'll take pics of the stack height differences of all 3 clutch/flywheel combinations. The only thing I didn't do as yet was take a pic of the S60R clutch/pressure plate on the 850 flywheel but I'm sure the stack height will still be much shorter since the S60R pressure plate is much shorter than the AP or 850R pressure plate

Upgrades For 96 850 Turbo

First post here so sorry if its in the wrong section.

Ok so I bought a 1996 850 Turbo for my first car for dirt cheap, it has around 250k miles on it.

It was owned by some old guy and I have quickly found out that sport mode is in fact quite sporty!

The car runs strong aside from a miss on Cylinder 2 due to a bent valve which will be fixed before any other upgrades are installed. (car got all new valves and 1 old one got mixed up into the new ones) It has also been having very rare issues when shifting, into 3rd especially but it has happened in 2nd and 4th, when I have to get on it in econ e.g. getting on the highway. if it is in sport the shifts are fine and if i hit the winter button the solid up arrow on the dash will come up and it feels like its stuck in 3rd gear. I have heard these transmissions don't like cold and its -10F to 10F here so maybe that has something to do with it.

With that said, here is what i plan on doing to the car

Turbo hose kit(some hoses are leaking due to age)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/US-Silicone-Boost-Turbo-Hose-Kit-Volvo-850-T-5-T-5R-1993-1997-S70-V70-T5-2-3L-RD-/331433606655?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4d2afb7dff&vxp=mtr

Exhaust

Wastegate adjustment+boostgauge

Bigger fuel injectors would also seem like another good upgrade to go with this so can someone suggest some?

Manual trans if the auto blows

My first question is will I see a noticeable performance increase?

Do you think the engine will be able to take it?

Any input on what i described with the trans would be greatly appreciated.

How many turns on the wastegate adjuster would give me about 11-12 psi? approx of course

Thanks in advance!
