Ok so I've been thinking about this ever since i realized the T4 can handle MUCH more power simply because of the difference in power strokes and balancing/vibration differences. I don't want to get into that discussion too much.
I'm just wondering what it would take too fit the t4 in the 850. obviously the m56 bolts up and what not...but are all the mounts completely different? what would it take to fit one in there? Ive only worked on a few and have never really took the time to measure anything as i just started thinking about this. please don't flame me on this...Im being serious, i think it would be really cool and just about anything is possible. Has anyone else thought about this? I know it would cost a lot of money.. i know about engine management and all that good stuff. I'm just curious on what would need to be modified to make it fit properly/square and level. I'm not saying I'm going to do this anytime soon but i would like to be the first one? to do this..as i think it would be very unique. So obviously using the m56 the 850 axles should work fine, but since the motor is shorter...there would be a few inches to account for. Im thinking maybe some sort of adapter plate or maybe the s40 axles would work? is the subframe completely different? again, I'm just CURIOUS. please don't shoot me down..I know the 5cyl can make plenty of power and can be made to withstand high hp with sleeves and all that good stuff. Don't get me wrong i love the 5cylinder..but it can't hold up to 750hp.. The extra cylinder throws off 2nd and 3rd order vibrations and can cause premature engine failure. It was designed to be in between a 4 and 6cyl... while having more power and torque then a 4cyl but being shorter then a 6cyl allowing the transverse fit and a bit better fuel economy. BUT like i said i just wanted to focus on fitment and the modifications required with that process. Engine management, turbos, internals and all that stuff is not the discussion topic here... i know what it would take for that kind of power(lots of damn money lol). And please don't ask me why i would need that much power or why in a fwd? who wouldn't want a 750-800hp fwd volvo anyway? Flame away...i mean don't flame away!!! :/
