The Vems Guide

Since not too much thread here about VEMS, I started a new one, to collect here our experiences: how to setup, tune and get unique solutions for smooth operation.

I worked with Megasquirt2 Extra in the past (engine B230FT) then switched to VEMS when I swapped T5 in my 740. In S70R I used Emanage piggyback, "Motronic self tune" and now VEMS 3.7.

We have some options to setup ECU in the engine bay. My first version was the stock Motronic case where I placed the vems board.
Now I have Vems 3.7 box in stock location, made a plug n play short harness, so I could switch back everything to Motronic in a few minutes. (The original harness left untouched)
Display is my Android phone, connected via 10$ Bluetooth adapter, works fine with all details. (except EGT, needs to developed by support team)

Specs:

  • Wideband (any LSU4 sensor works)
  • EGT (after turbo, in dp…should be relocated into the collector)
  • Volvo COPs..dwell: ~2.1ms@14V  (not sure if it’s the right value for Volvo coil)
  • Trigger setup could be tricky. (Will explain this later)

                 h[0]=08 02 01 04 10 20 40 80     /injetor fire order

                 h[1]=00 60 48 30 18 FF FF FF   /Trigger tooth
                 h[2]=00 70 60 30 10 10 60 60    /Ign fire order

  • Boost control: done, works
  • IDLE: stock, works
  • Tachometer: pulled 12V output from vems (divider 20)
  • Coolant temp: ECC also requires it, so we have two options.

1.     Hook up Motronic ECU, give pos, negative wires and only the coolant signals.

2.     Create a small 2$ circuit to generate frequency to instrument panel: 40Hz-21Hz (20°-100°)

  • WheelSpeed/roadspeed: not ready (VEMS boards after 2010 can handle 0-12v signals!)
  • Knock control: not ready yet (works at my buddy)
  • Traction control could be set up, but not so important to me.

Future plans:

Fine tune start up time, shorter cranking from 2-3 seconds)

VVT control setup
EVAP control
Trip Computer: could be handled in the future, but not important, because Vems can display consumption in main screen, present and average also.

I will keep this post updated, extend with more detailed information continuously. You can contact me or member: nari (960 T5 with VEMS)  if any question come up regarding this.

Please excuse the mess of installation, but everything is just in stage first, engine has only 2K since the bulid.

   First VEMS installation back in 2010 for 740 T5.

Tuning dilemma:

B5244T3 2435cc LPT engine, comp 9.0.   20G, FMIC, R mani, 3” exhaust

the main goal would be to find the proper MBT (min advance for best torque), it’s way difficult by street tuning :S
All of these below are not final values, only attempting for the time being. (my huge problem is timing the -unplugged- dual CVVT, finding base LSA)
IDLE timings: 15-20° …checking where is the healthiest. Suggestion?
light cruise: 1000-3000, 50KPa: 20-35° Suggestion? I tried to figure out MAF loads and convert it to MAP but ehh :S

      How much can I advance here without getting unnecessary stress on piston but considerably good fuel economy?  The ping detection method is not working here as I know, only at high loads.

Stock timing ~2.3 R ..but in load :(
