Need help making a decision that's becoming inevitable: my M56h transmission shifts well but is developing an increasing "rebound" effect. Kind of hard to describe, but every gear change (most evident in low gears) the transmission/drive train "rocks" a bit during the "slack moment" as the clutch releases and just as power is applied. This play is also evident in grabbing and rotating the axle back and forth while under the car. Also happens very noticeably when driving over speed bumps at low speed in first as the rear wheels come over and it rebounds fore-aft with a loud metallic clicking. (All mounts and bushings, etc., around the engine have been replaced, thinking they were the cause, but ruled out).
What are the best options?
A reputable local shop has quoted $2,000 to R/R the trans and rebuild the internals using OEM-quality parts (as many of you know, Volvo does not offer replacement internals). I was told it could be a few $100 less, depending on the amount of rebuilding needed.
What would be the expected price/range for a good used (Junkyard) M56h, and how can you ensure it's good?
Any other options?
Thanks
