Hey,
I'm trying to avoid buying a new car, and/or replacing the T6 with the V8 as they are rare and when they do pop up they are a good £4,000 more then a T6 equivalent and have fairly high unwarranted mileage, so its not worth taking the risk on an unknown car.
My theory is this, if I can achieve a remapped V8's performance from my T6 then I am happy to keep it for several years to come (according the RICA the V8 can be remapped to around 345bhp, so this is the goal.)
I have a £3,000 budget, is this unreasonable? If this was a BMW I can easily ebay a bunch of tubular manifolds/cams/TB's and differentials etc to add performance but this being a rarely modified T6 engine it is extensively difficult finding any decent credible tuning information (nothing for the XC90.)
My list of possible upgrade parts:
- Custom Tubular Intake & Exhaust Manifolds
- Ported/Polished Head
- Throttle Body Upgrade
- Air Intake System
- High Flow Sports Cats (no cat-backs, sorry!)
- Forged Pistons/Rods
- Added Factory (towing) Oil Cooler To Autobox
- DNA Remap (apparently they write maps from scratch.)
Other possible parts (from BMW experience)
- Upgraded Cams?
- Uprated Injectors?
- Upgraded Differentials? Doubt it though.
From my understanding, the T6 uses the 6 speed auto box that is said to be a piece of junk, if this is the case how do you explain the same autobox being found in the 300bhp S60R? Lots of people remap the R to around 350BHP with succession.... I'm just asking BTW, not criticizing. Also, I heard with a few hundred bucks you can fix this specific autobox's weak link, what ever that is.
For the record, I have the autobox's oil changed every 10k miles, or around the same time I get a full service. However it has covered over 100,000 now so I can't exactly vouch for the previous owners servicing habits which I doubt existed.
I'm dead serious about this BTW. I am getting a little sick and tired of not being able to join traffic quick enough and having to wait at round abouts for ages because I hesitate etc. I mean the official 0-60 is 9.3 seconds and that was 9 years ago. An additional 70bhp should solve all problems! Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
Plus, if I can succeed my goal it would have been an excellent project to have worked on. The vehicle would feel so much more personal then just buying a faster one.
I'd rather not touch the turbo's as I love the fact that they are tiny and spool up almost instantly! I really need 0-30 / 0-40 mph performance more then anything.
Oh, I forgot to ask.... How well would the 4x4 system on the XC90 actually handle the extra boost in performance? From my understanding the 4.4 V8 ironed out a bunch of problems with the transmission and drive system, how much of that is relevant exactly?
also, is it possible to use the V8's autobox incase my one fails in the future? I've heard those things are bulletproof, whatever box they used.
Thanks!
