Hi there, some of you may have seen my 1998 rebuild thread. I got wrenching and making a parts list and its adding up to a little more than I thought it would. I came across a few threads discussing the RN (1999+) swap into 1998 – (N) Volvos and thought this might be an alternative option.
I am starting a new topic here to summarize my findings on the RN swap and ask a couple of questions that I have not found answers for. So far this is what is needed for an RN swap into a 1998- Volvo:
-Motor from a 99+ (RN) Volvo. I am leaning towards a 2.5L from a 2003-2009 V70 LPT. The LPT can be purchased for around $800usd. I imagine the HPT is a lot more.
Designation: Volvo B 5254 T2 LPT
Output 208 hp at 5000 rpm (154 kW/83 rps)
Max. torque 236 ft. lbs. at 1500-4500 rpm (320 Nm/25-75 rps)
Number of cylinders 5
Bore 3.27" (83 mm)
Stroke 3.67" (93.2 mm)
Displacement 2.5 liters
Compression ratio 9.0:1
Number of valves 20
Boost: 6psi
Designation: Volvo B 5254 T4 HPT
Output 300 hp at 5500 rpm* (220 kW/92 rps)*
Max. torque 295 ft. lbs. at 1950-5250 rpm** (400 Nm/31-95 rps)**
Number of cylinders 5
Bore 3.27" (83 mm)
Stroke 3.67" (93.2 mm)
Displacement 2.5 liters
Compression ratio 8.5:1
Number of valves 20
Boost: 12psi
-Use a 1998- intake manifold and all sensors and throttle body etc.
-Drill a 7/16 hole in the center of intake cam for clearance to mount the distributor and cam position sensor off the 1998- (N) motor.
-Simply leave the variable valve timing (VVT) disconnected if you plan to use the 1998 ECU.
-Use the 1998 thermostat housing and bracket for the hose to the expansion tank. Some people use the stock 99+ t stat housing and drill a hole and tape it for a fitting. I don’t know the actual way to do this yet.
-Use all RN engine mounts that come with the RN motor except for the front lower mount which needs to be from the 1998 motor.
-Use new RN brackets on intake side of motor for PS, alt, and AC. The 1998 braket will not work with the accessories.
-There will need to be some modification to the fuel lines. There are lots of different options but I think bending the stock lines is easiest.
Am I on the right track here? Please comment so I can make corrections and I hope this information can be useful to other VS users.
Questions:
1. I currently have a 16T turbo on my 1998 motor. Will this turbo bolt to the RN manifold and will all the oil and coolant lines match up? Most concerned about the oil return line.
2. I have a tuned ARD computer to run 15psi on my 1998 2.4L block. Will this computer also work for the 2.5L RN engine?
3. How are the oil cooler lines connected in all this? Right now my 1998 motor run the lines below the crank pulley to radiator. I read somewhere about an internal oil cooler.
4. I have a 5spd manual transmission in the 1998 V70 wagon. Will the dual mass flywheel, clutch etc from the 1998 mount to the RN crankshaft?
5. Will the transmission even mount to the 2003+ block?
