Have been thinking about cars in general and in particular, whether to buy new/used or rebuild what I have. I purchased a new car once. No regrets, but not sure I would do it again. Not enough joy per dollar.
I have a 1997 850 base sedan (non-turbo). It was my father in laws car so it has some sentimental attachment for me. It has 250K miles on it. It runs well, but I need to put some money into it in the near future and am planning ahead.
My wife's car is a 2005 T5 s60 AWD. Great car and I really love the turbo. I think Volvo got it right with the balance of performance, economy and safety.
In any case, been doing some research on CNG conversions. The EPA has relaxed it's rules on conversion (see link), particularly on older vehicles. The home refueling station would put CNG at under $1/gallon with a home compressor.
Also have been reading about Megasquirt ECM and support for gaseous fuels.
What makes sense to me is to rebuild a t5 engine and optimize it for CNG. I could take a junkyard t5 and convert it but pulling an engine out is a huge chore. I would like to only do it once if I can help it.
Not looking to race or build crazy horsepower. I would like a make 400ish or so, essentially like a R with mods. Looking for advice here on anyone who has gone down this road before. I know they sell CNG/LPG pretty extensively as a motorfuel in other parts of the world.
Am I crazy?
